The Stick & The Stars

The Life & Times of Commander Bill King

The Stick & The Stars

"The iron decks. The polished brass. The grey, clean paint, whose smoothness we were forbidden to test with our fingers,. The engines. The guns silhoutted dramatically against the dawn and the night sky. Such was our nursery. Between Gibraltar, Malta, Majorca, Alexandria, Athens and Constantinople the years of our youth fled, and we slipped tardily into manhood, moulded, simple fashion, by the stick and the stars."

Extracted from Page 15 of Commander Bill King's first book "The Stick and The Stars" (published 1958), summarising his memories of the Mediterranean during his midshipman training as a teenager aboard the H.M.S Resolution (1927-1930).
